The minimum computer specs to run computer jobs at home.

(While working on this I realized I could add more detail to the requirements so I’m writing two articles instead of one. This one is where I cover the hardware. The second article will give you the software options for your home business).

If you are looking to start a computer job at home, but have no computer, then, what’s the point? You should find a way to obtain a computer for your business by getting credit, borrowing money, asking your friends and family, shopping at the flea market, or as a last resource, renting a pc on an internet cafe (not recommended).

That’s the good thing about computers, that you don’t need the latest technology to start your business. Work for a while, and once you get a few dollars, buy yourself a couple of upgrades. Right now, you need to cover the minimum specifications:

– a small hard drive; one with 80 gigabytes of storage will be good enough to start with;
– one memory card with at least 512 megabytes of RAM;
– most software comes in cd format, so add a cd reader; a dvd would be much better;
– something to connect to the world, a network card;
– one not too fancy CRT monitor;
– Keyboard and mouse are a must.

You may get lucky and find used equipment with the previous specification for as low as US$30 dollars, but normally it will be in the range of $50-$100 dollars.

Don’t mind if the specifications I’m mentioning here are old (because they are, and I’m writing this on December 2009); you can still get the parts from computer shops and they probably have some of this parts in their original packages, so you get a pc assembled by experts at a very low price.

The kind of low cost computer that any shop can assemble for you today with parts right “out of the box” will be between $300 and $400 depending on the components. In this price range you should get at least:
– a bigger hard disk
– you can double your ram
– CD/DVD reader
– a nice card for internet connection
– an integrated sound card
– a nice LCD display
– your mouse, and obviously a keyboard.

If you want to go over $400, then you can get a bigger hard disk, one or two extra gigabytes of RAM, a CD/DVD recorder instead of just a reader, a microphone, speakers and/or headphones. And since you are already in this price range, there are small laptops you can get in case you’re willing to sacrifice some physical comfort to gain in portability. One big advantage of laptops is that you can work almost anywhere and you can bring your talents with you and show them to your potential costumers.

You need something to get your work done, so don’t be discouraged if your computer doesn’t look like the ones you see on magazine or tv ads. The quality of your work relies more on making good and timely deliveries. Measure yourself, and do what you can to improve.

But, get yourself a computer. Come on, you’re almost there!
